Joint post by Christine Anne Domestic Abuse Services, Harbor House Domestic Abuse Services, Reach Counseling Services, Sexual Assault Crisis Center and Voices of Men.
We are voices in support of survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence in the Fox Valley.
On Aug. 14, 2018, Shannon Kenevan was forced to resign as the community engagement leader of “Voices of Men” (see press release). Learning of the reports from women in our communities has been devastating and heartbreaking. As the four founding agencies of VoM, we understand the cultural and personal shift that must happen if we are to create a world where all women, all people, can live safely.
Now more than ever we call on our leaders to more insistently promote accountability among the men in their lives. This is a fundamental aspect of being an ally in the work to create a world free from violence and abuse. Men must stand up, speak out, engage other men, demand change and hold each other accountable if we are to achieve the social change that is necessary to prevent men’s violence and abuse. Shannon Kenevan’s actions violated the mission and standards of Voices of Men and betrayed the trust of those who shared with him the power to facilitate social change. Women have been injured. The movement has been deceived and our communities will feel the effects for some time.
Our agencies want to be part of the healing process for our entire community. We are here to stand with and provide resources to survivors throughout their journey towards healing. Our focus is always on the survivors’ needs and concerns. This empowers survivors and minimizes the possibility of re-traumatization with the goal of helping them heal.
